About Us….
Our little paradise we live in & our story
Mahahual is a small fishing village of about 900 inhabitants in the state of Quintana Roo and is the heart of Costa Maya on the Western Caribbean. The Costa Maya region begins about 140 miles south of Cancun and stretches from the vast Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve almost to the Belize border.
Julie learned how to swim before she could even walk! Growing up, she and her family spent winters on the beaches of Oahu. Julie considers herself part fish! Julie is an Instructor Trainer for PSUPA (Professional Standup Paddle Association) certified by Rob Casey. She is also experienced with SUP racing, SUP Surfing, long distance and downwind runs on the Pacific waters of the northwest and Hawaii. She also earned her yoga instructors certification to enable her to share the SUP Yoga experience.
Curt, grew up in Washington state and was the youngest of six children. He joined the military after high school graduation to explore the world. While Curt was a Marine he met, fell in love with and married Julie. They spent the next several years living exploring exciting new places. While stationed in Hawaii he became a PADI Certified Divemaster.
Julie and Curt discovered sailing while on vacation in the British Virgin Islands and spent a great deal of their free time sailing the waters of the Pacific NorthWest with their two children. During one of their sailing excursions they discovered and fell in love with Standup Paddle Boarding. Their desire to share this sport with friends and family led them to starting their own SUP business in Washington. Living in a small coastal town allowed them to take adventurous paddle boarders on remote excursions, but the seasons were short and the waters were cold.
Curt and Julie purchased, moved and took over the day to day operations of UnderToe Mexico in January 2015 with a goal to introduce exciting new tours and excursions while expanding the UnderToe Mexico lesson program.
After 4 years of working and growing Undertoe Mexico, Julie and Curt were asked to take over as the Directors of the Professional Standup Paddle Association (PSUPA). The time commitment needed from them for PSUPA to grow members globally along with introducing new processes was a bigger time commitment than anticipated, so the day to day rental and lesson operations from Undertoe needed to be transferred to someone with the time to dedicate to it.
May of 2019 was the birth of Vagary Paddle which is focused on Training, Education and Certifications from PSUPA. Working closely with Undertoe, we are excited to see the growth of the Standup Paddle Board industry and look forward to where we can take it.
